Campanula: A Revolution in Spice Dispensing

Igor Lobanov's Award-Winning Salt and Pepper Shaker Design

The inspiration behind Campanula lies in the natural process of shaking. Lobanov was intrigued by the movement of particles within an enclosed volume, and how the shape and movement of the enclosure can direct these particles. This led him to design a shaker that enhances the user experience by simplifying and refining the process of dispensing spices.

What sets Campanula apart is its minimalistic shape and smart functionality. The design of the jar ensures that a simple shake guides the spice particles along the internal surface, directing them to the opening at the bottom. This eliminates the need to turn the jar upside down, and each shake dispenses almost equal portions of spices, allowing for easy dosage.

The Campanula shaker is made from molded glass or plastic and turned wood, giving it a sleek and modern appearance. The technical specifications of the design are a height of 138 mm and a diameter of 50 mm, making it a compact and practical addition to any kitchen or dining table.

The interaction with the Campanula shaker is simple and intuitive. A few shakes over the dish dispense the spices, with each shake causing the spices to move from the large volume into a smaller one, and then down into a tiny tube that leads outside the shaker. This design not only filters the spices but also ensures that only a fixed portion is dispensed with each shake.

Designing the Campanula was not without its challenges. Lobanov had to find the right shape that would meet various ergonomic and mechanical requirements. The main volume for spices needed to be refillable, and the height of the internal tube had to be just right to ensure that all spices would remain inside when the shaker was turned for refilling.

Campanula is not just a design marvel but also a testament to Igor Lobanov's intellectual property. The design, which was awarded Silver in the A' Bakeware, Tableware, Drinkware, and Cookware Design Award in 2017, is a symbol of outstanding expertise and innovation, and it introduces positive feelings, amazement, and wonder to the user.
